I Samuel 7:2
“From the time that the Chest came to rest in Kiriath Jearim, a long time passed—twenty years it was—and throughout Israel there was a widespread, fearful movement toward GOD.”
“The Ark remained in Kiriath Jearim for a long time- twenty years in all. During that time all Israel mourned because it seemed the Lord had abandoned them.”
Israel missed God. The emptiness of their God shaped hole developed indigestion and they longed for filling. He was the only thing that would relieve the acidic irritation in their hearts. They fully acknowledged their need for their creator. Samuel’s preaching was effective.
I love this verse for two reasons. Judgement bore its fruit. Trauma and death led to renewal. It is lovely to imagine the peace and joy this wrought in the people. Samuel’s teaching and wise leadership also bore fruit. It must have given him great joy and fulfillment. He connected the Lord he loved with the people he loved in a prefiguring of Christ’s work on our behalf.
Oh Lord. I need you too. Fill the space within me that is satisfied with no other. Bless me with the comfort of having eaten a delicious meal.
